The Climate Restoration Program

For a safe climate by 2050

Net-zero means not adding more greenhouse gasses (GHG) in the future, mostly by turning to clean energy. That’s vital.

But it doesn’t touch what’s already in the atmosphere after 150 years of burning fossil fuels.

To restore a safe climate, we also need to remove one trillion tons of “legacy” CO2 from the air.

The good news is that Nature has done this before. We are committed to doing so again by 2050.

Everyone wants to leave our children a safe climate—one that humanity has thrived in over the long-term.

Yet the world’s current goal—net-zero emissions by 2050—is no longer sufficient.

Climate Restoration

is the ambitious and growing movement to end the climate crisis and restore a historically safe climate by 2050.

A safe climate is one in which humanity and current ecosystems have thrived over the long term, with pre-industrial CO2 levels.

Climate restoration embraces emissions reduction… and goes beyond, to remove the huge amount of excess CO2 already in the air.

For our climate to be safe by 2050, we need to scale up climate-restoration solutions now, to be ready to remove 60 gigatons (GT) a year by 2030.

The Climate Restoration Program is the hub of climate restoration research and action. The Program provides the most comprehensive knowledge base on climate-restoration solutions, updates on their progress, and opportunities to engage. ABOUT

Most people think

that the global goal of net-zero emissions by 2050 will provide a safe climate.

It won’t. Yes, we need to move to clean energy with all haste, but…

We also need

to remove a 1 trillion tons of CO2 that’s already in the atmosphere. That’s a scale that only natural-process solutions can achieve in the short term.

In addition, we’ll need to restore safe methane levels

Many assume it’s impossible… but it’s been done before!

Mother Nature has removed roughly a trillion tons of CO2 many times, in the ice age cycle. In some locations, she also removes large amounts very quickly after volcanoes.

What’s needed now is support—by citizens, climate activists and officials. Support to focus climate efforts at all levels on restoring a safe climate by 2050.

Can we do it by 2050?

For our climate to be safe by 2050, we need to scale up climate-restoration solutions now, to be ready to remove 60 gigatons (GT) a year by 2030.

We can if we act now.  Nature-inspired climate restoration solutions are proven, swift, and inexpensive.

We already know how we can replicate natural processes—without the ice age or the volcano!  If we scale up by 2030, we could remove all the legacy CO2 by 2050, while Earth systems are still reasonably intact. MORE
